Malayalam vowels
There are 13 vowels in the malayalam script. They are
അ ആ ഇ ഈ ഉ ഊ ഋ എ ഏ ഐ ഒ ഓ ഔ അം അ:
അ - a as in father
ആ - aa as in mAmA
ഇ - i as in pin
ഈ - I as in sleep
ഉ - u as in put
ഊ - oo as in soon
ഋ - ru as in ruse
എ - a as in many
ഏ - a as in say
ഐ - ai as in gain
ഒ - o as in go
ഓ - O as in goal
ഔ - ow as in owl
അം - am as in gum
അ: - aha
These are the independent forms of the vowels. But when these vowels combine with consonants they take the form of a vowel sign. So, mostly it is only when the vowels occur at the start of a word that they use the independent form. In the middle and end of a word they take the vowel sign form. In the next lesson we will see a video of the picture dictionary of malayalam vowels used in the words.
